While painting a small panel of an iceberg recently, I found myself struggling with the palette required to render the ice and snow. This is nothing new. Several years ago, while plein air painting in the Badlands of Alberta, I suffered the same malaise. Coming from the “greens of summer” at home in Ontario, the earth colours of the "hoodoos" presented a real challenge. Fortunately (and thankfully), persistence won out!
