Our Function as Artists

“It is our function as artists to make the spectator see the world our way – not his way." (Mark Rothco)

This almost-derelict barn grabbed my eye more than a few times as I drove the country roads around Stouffville. One day, as the dark clouds of a passing storm started to recede and the sunlight hit it like a spotlight, I pulled my paints and watercolour block from the trunk of my car and set to work. As the quotation from Mark Rothco suggests, I saw this abandoned shed as a colourful patchwork of repairs that spoke of a long, useful existence prolonged with care. I hope you see what I saw...

Patchwork (14-1/4" x 10-3/4")
