Life on the Edge

The artist is a receptacle for emotions that come from all over the place: from the sky, from the earth, from a scrap of paper, from a passing shape, from a spider’s web. (Pablo Picasso)

When we visited Maligne Lake in beautiful Jasper Park, Alberta, we embarked on cruise to see the iconic and much photographed Spirit Island. It was stunning! It is now high on my long list of paintings to attempt. On the return trip we passed a tilted rock island so small that it only held two trees. They seemed undaunted by their circumstance and seemed to be thriving. The backdrop of dense forest and mountains only added to the spectacle. As I didn’t feel the captain would stop long enough for me to paint, I had to commit it to memory.
